ORIENTEERING SCHOOL · ALMATY
Map, compass and
your decision
We organize orienteering events in parks, mountains and the city. For children and adults, with courses for beginners.
About the club
INTERRA is an orienteering school in Almaty. We organize training sessions and competitions for children and adults and help newcomers take their first steps, even if they have never held an orienteering map before.
Orienteering is a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Using a map and compass, participants find checkpoints (controls) in the shortest possible time. There is no single correct route: everyone chooses their own path, speed and tactics, and the quality of those decisions matters just as much as physical fitness.
Events take place outdoors all year round: in forests, mountains, parks and urban areas, as well as in maze orienteering.
Our goals
The club's goals will appear here: what the club wants to develop and whom it holds its events for. This text is temporary: the club will write and send its own text, which will then replace this one.

FOR BEGINNERS
Your first event
What to bring
- Compass —a liquid-filled orienteering compass. We provide one for your first training session.
- Orienteering map —provided at every event.
- Shoes —trail running shoes with good grip.
- Clothing —lightweight clothing that protects you from branches and the weather.
- Timing chip —SportIdent or Emit — used at each control, provided at the start.
- Water —for courses longer than 5 km.
GPS devices are prohibited during competitions under the rules.
How to complete your course
- Choose a course in category “«Open»”: it is shorter and technically easier.
- Check your map every 50–100 metres. If unsure, stop and relocate.
- Follow linear features such as roads, rivers and forest rides.
- Use your timing chip at every control. Missing a control means your result will not count.
- Arrive 30 minutes before your start to collect your map and ask questions.
Your first training session is free.
We provide a compass and explain the map on site.
